Flexiline™ used in Dam Rebuild

Rehabilitation of Flood Control Structure at Bucao River, Construction of Slope Protection implemented by Department of Public Works and Highways, Philippines.

The problem
Heavy rains during the monsoon season resulted in extreme soil erosion, displacing hundreds of families due to the subsequent flooding in Botolan, Zambales Province. With the collapse of protective embankments and damaged dikes by the swollen rivers, future flooding in the area would be inevitable. Measures had to be taken to rebuild the dykes to protect the region from potential floods.

Overview
Responsible for the construction and maintenance of infrastructure facilities, especially flood control and water resource development systems, the Department of Public Works and Highways put forward the rebuilding of dykes in their Rehabilitation of Flood Control Structure at Bucao River, Construction of Slope Protection project early 2023. HPL General Construction undertook the rehabilitation project utilising Geotube® bags to form the base of the new concrete embankment.

Project opportunity
Use 4 x 25 m of Crusader Hose 6” Flexiline™ layflat hose with an Atlas Copco WEDA L70 slurry pump to transfer the slurry (60% dense solids, 40% saltwater) to Geotube bags (dewatering containers), as proposed by Power Systems Inc. Flexiline, fitted with Bauer couplings, enables pipelines to be assembled safely and efficiently. With its textile reinforcement, Flexiline can easily manage the required 35 psi working pressure, and its abrasion-resistant thermoplastic polyurethane exterior and interior are ideal for handling the task.

Trainers/Installers

  • Geovanni Escuyos, Crusader Hose – Business Development Manager with 15+ years of experience in layflat hose training.
  • Reneboy Segador, Power System Inc – Sales Supervisor
  • Chito Mongaya, Power System Inc – Manager, Technical Services Group
  • Installation crew

Equipment
Four (4) x 25 m lengths of 6” Flexiline hose fitted with Bauer couplings.

Procedure

1.  Four (4) Flexiline hose lengths connected on-site ~ 1 hour.

2.  Pipeline connected to slurry pump on one end and Geotextile tube on the other.

3.  Slurry was pumped into Geotube ~ 2 hours per tube.

Outcomes

  • Flexiline pipeline was assembled and deployed in ~ 1 hour. Safer and easier to handle vs rigid pipe or HDPE.
  • Each Geotube was filled in ~ 2 hours.
  • Dyke rehabilitation project was completed in six (6) months.
  • Basis for new dyke constructed in a relatively short time.
  • As the outcome was deemed a breakthrough in efficiency and efficacy, the equipment was transferred and used at another project site.

Further scope

Mr Escuyos to follow up with recommendations for future flood control measures using emergency dewatering systems from Crusader Hose. These include the Argyle Reel System and large-diameter layflat hose.

Summary

  • Safe
  • Efficient
  • Cost-effective

Comments

We recommended Flexiline from Crusader Hose because we were confident it could handle high-density abrasive materials, including sand and gravel. We were happy with the result. The slurry pump and Flexiline have been used for our client’s projects at Zambales and Palawan for almost a year.” – Power Systems, Inc.
